Best Wishes for a Fabulous School Year!

Though officially I have retired my rhinestone hat, I will never retire the ideals of service before self that I have been taught— first by mother at the Welfare Office and the Salvation Army and then later by the many wonderful members of my extended pageant family. That’s why when I was asked to deliver a speech at the Mennies School in Vineland, NJ, as part of their annual “First Day Celebration,” I was absolutely delighted to say yes!

I’m not sure why, but I imagined I’d be speaking in a classroom to a handful of students— imagine then my surprise when I looked out to this precious bunch of 670 students (plus their teachers, the school faculty & some parents!). Not only that, I was joined onstage by Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam, as well as Vineland Mayor Robert Romano.

The celebration was just incredible— I was so impressed by how engaged and enthusiastic the entire group was, and even more so as they applauded their fellow classmates who performed the National Anthem and the school song. Perhaps the most touching moment was listening as they recited the school pledge, promising to treat one another with respect at all times and to give their personal best in all of their endeavors.

When my name was called, I stepped up to the microphone unsure of what I might add to what already seemed the perfect celebration welcoming a new year of education. After challenging the students to give the most lively greeting of the morning (this is where I’ll ask you to picture 670+ students shouting “good morning!” in my direction), it dawned on me that I might just have some personal experience to contribute. This time, I held the crown in my hands and spoke of just how many times I tried unsuccessfully before I had one to call my own. I said that though aiming high and working hard are important places to start, there is no substitute for persistence. Once you have set your mind out to accomplish something, it may not be easy and it may not happen on the first try— the key is to continue on, to keep going. You may not end up getting exactly what you wished for, but at the very least, you will learn so much about yourself. You will become a stronger, more resilient person. You will find that you are infinitely more capable than you ever imagined possible.

…and hey, maybe you’ll meet your best friends while you’re at it. I know I did.

Thank you so much to the students and faculty of the Mennies School, especially Mr. Hartman for the invitation to participate. It was truly a joy to feel the energy & the “first day” jitters once again!
